Small Business Saturday

Between Black Friday and Cyber Monday sits Small Business Saturday, a day dedicated to supporting small businesses and
their communities.  We hope you’ll join us in supporting small businesses by committing to shop small, shop local for the 3rd annual

Small Business Saturday
on November 24, 2012

If millions of Americans shop small, it will be huge:

Unlike money spent with publicly traded companies, national chains or franchises;small, locally owned businesses help money earned locally stay local:
·         Your dollars spent in locally-owned businesses have 3 times the impact on your community as dollars spent at national chains.
·         When shopping locally, you simultaneously create jobs, fund more city services through sales tax, invest in neighborhood improvement and promote community development.

If just one in three microenterprises hired a single employee, the U.S. would be at full employment.

Local small businesses are owned and managed by your friends, neighbors, classmates and WBDC graduates.

For more information, and to make your pledge to shop small, visit: Facebook.com/smallbusinesssaturday

Inner City Movement presents "Light" November 17th & 18th

Inner-City Movement presents

"LIGHT"- ALL STUDENT SHOW

Thanks to all who joined us for our free movie series in the month of September. It was a powerful and enjoyable time of fellowship that gathered a crowd of regular attendees. As for our next theatrical undertaking, we'll be having our first-ever All-Student Presentation entitled Light on November 17 & 18, Saturday & Sunday, at 5pm. Admission is free; but the Core Students are selling $6 glow in the dark "LIGHT" bracelets, which gives purchasers preffered seating at the shows. This helps raise support for the program so please purchase one at the door if possible.  In "Light", current and graduated students alike will be singing, dancing, acting, and using other creative gifts, all for the purpose of conveying the theme of Christians called to be light in the midst of darkness. Please note attendance at one of these presentations is mandatory for youth interested in enrolling in The Core in order to start classes in January.

October saw the return of current students and an incoming group of new students. The most recent change to The Core program is that graduated students who are interested in continuing their involvement are returning to partner with incoming students to provide a godly example and help teach their Script Bible classes. These partnerships are already bearing fruit, as new students look forward to coming back each week and knowing they have someone their age who's excited to see them and share with them.

Election Day - Beware When Voting

Vote Wisely,

Ephesians 6:10-18
English Standard Version (ESV)

The Whole Armor of God
...
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.
Pay Attention

Good Word

In light of the storm we survived and the upcoming celebration of the Birth of Jesus Christ I thought this word would encourage us to Love one Another as he has Loved us.  Taken from Today God is First by O.S. Hillman.  Be Blessed.

Regaining the Art of Community
October 25

"But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin (1 John 1:7).

I have a friend who spent three months living in Israel with Jewish believers. During one of their conversations the Jewish man noticed how often my friend came to visit him only to discuss a project. He turned to my friend during dinner and admonished him: "You western Christians! You always seem to need a program or an event to get together. Why can't you fellowship with one another just because you love each other!?"

My friend was convicted by his assessment. They began to talk about how Jesus modeled love for the disciples and how they simply hung out together because of their love for one another. "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" (John 13:34-35).
Jesus often spent unhurried times of fellowship with the disciples. They shared countless meals together. It is often during such times we get to know others at a deeper level.

Love for one another is one of the greatest signs of faith in Christ. However, the pace of life often contributes to a life being lived for the next event instead of a relationship rooted in the love of Christ.

How many relationships do you have in your life that would allow you to fellowship simply because you cared for one another?

Job Posting - Temporary Data Entry Specialist

CEI is looking for Data Entry Specialists in the Philadelphia area.  Please review the job description below and respond with a Microsoft Word version of your resume if you are interested in applying.

Data Entry Specialist:
Loading of data into a Call Data Recording system.

The duties will entail reviewing Excel spreadsheets and comparing the information to a web based organization chart on our intranet.  Information will then be gleaned from the org chart and updated in the system.  This is not a heads down, high speed data entry position.  I really need someone who could think their way through organization charts.  The individual will also be updating cost information in the system so accuracy is key as it will determine departmental charge backs.

Qualifications include basic familiarity with Excel and browser based applications.  The person should be detailed oriented so as not to misalign the employee and their department.

I Said a Prayer for You Today

I said a prayer for you today
And know God must have heard.
I felt the answer in my heart
Although He spoke no word!

I didn't ask for wealth or fame
(I knew you wouldn't mind).
I asked him to send treasures
Of a far more lasting kind!

I asked that He be near you
At the start of each new day;
To grant you health and blessings
And friends to share your way!

I asked for happiness for you
In all things great and small.
But it was for His loving care
I prayed the most of all!

Stay strong everyone and know that God loves you and will never leave you. Have faith through the tough times that there will be good times to follow~ Never lose your hope~ He is a God who keeps His promises.

HURRICANE SANDY

As we prepare for the impending Hurricane Sandy, please take a moment to engage in preparedness activities. NBC10 says the rain is expected to arrive on Sunday evening with the heaviest rain and strongest winds most likely on Monday into Tuesday.  I would encourage you to:

·         Review your Family Emergency Plan and update as needed.
·         Be prepared to evacuate if local officials instruct you to do so.
·         Be prepared for potential long-term power outages.
·         Leaves are excellent material to clog/block storm drains, and make flooding worse. Get leaves and any other obstructing materials away from storm drains before the storm arrives.

HURRICANE TIPS
• HAVE AN EMERGENCY KIT FOR YOU AND YOUR PET in case you need to evacuate.
BEFORE the storm:
• SIGN UP TO RECEIVE FREE EMERGENCY ALERT INFORMATION at www.readynotifypa.org
• IF YOU EXPERIENCE A POWER OUTAGE be prepared with flashlights/ extra batteries/lanterns, do not use candles.
• MONITOR STREAM AND URBAN STREET FLOODING – For those living in areas that are prone to localized flooding, closely watch small streams and low-lying areas for early flooding. Make sure street storm drains are cleared.
• SECURE OUTSIDE OBJECTS.  Hurricane force winds can make outdoor furniture into missiles.
• MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PLENTY OF FUEL AND WATER.
• HAVE SEVERAL DAYS SUPPLY OF FOOD, WATER AND PRESCRIPTION
MEDICATION for each family member.
• REGISTER YOURSELF OR LOVED ONES WITH THE SPECIAL NEEDS REGISTRY at
www.specialneedspa.org if you or they have difficulty receiving or acting upon emergency instructions.  This service is for individuals who live in Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery Counties.
• DO NOT WALK THROUGH FLOWING WATER – Drowning is the number one cause of flood deaths. Most of these drownings occur during flash floods. Flash flood waters move at very fast speeds and can roll boulders, sweep away cars, tear out trees, destroy buildings, and obliterate bridges. Six inches of swiftly moving water can knock you off of your feet.
If you MUST walk through a flooded area, use a pole or stick to ensure that the ground is still there
and solid, even where the water is not flowing.
DURING AND AFTER the storm:
• DO NOT DRIVE THROUGH A FLOODED AREA – More people drown in their cars than anywhere else. Cars can be swept away in just 2 feet of moving water. Do not drive around road barriers. They are there for a reason. The road or bridge may be washed out or structurally unsound. If your car becomes trapped in floodwaters, abandon it immediately and climb to higher ground.  Many deaths have resulted from attempts to move stalled
vehicles. TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN• AVOID POWER LINES AND ELECTRICAL WIRES – Electrocution is also a major killer in floods. Electrical current can travel through water. Report downed power lines to your
utility company or local emergency manager. Always assume a downed wire is a live wire.
The number to PECO is 1-800-841-4141; the number to PPL is 1-800-342-5775.
• LOOK BEFORE YOU STEP – After a flood, the ground and floors are covered with debris, including broken bottles and nails. Floors and stairs that have been covered with mud can be very slippery.
• BE ALERT FOR GAS LEAKS – Do not turn on electric lights, but use a flashlight to inspect for damage. A spark from the light switch could cause an explosion or fire.   Do not smoke or use candles, lanterns or open flames unless you are sure that the gas has been turned off and the area has been aired out.
• CARBON MONOXIDE EXHAUST KILLS – Only use camping stoves, generators or other gasoline-powered machines outdoors. Fumes from charcoal are especially deadly, so never use indoors.
• CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT GETS WET – Floodwaters have probably picked up sewage and chemicals from roads, farms and factories. Spoiled food and flooded medicines and cosmetics are health hazards. When in doubt, throw them away.
• DO NOT CALL 9-1-1 TO REPORT A POWER OUTAGE. You should call your electric service provider. The number to PECO is 1-800-841-4141; the number to PPL is 1-800-342-5775.
• MONITOR LOCAL WEATHER REPORTS on radio, television and the internet.
• CHECK ON ELDERLY NEIGHBORS and others that experience difficulty in caring for themselves or receiving or acting upon emergency instructions.
• Follow your local Department of Emergency Services on Facebook or Twitter

Visit American Red Cross for more hurricane preparedness tips.

Social Security Benefit Statements

SOCIAL SECURITY STATEMENTS ONLINE
You may be aware that last year Social Security suspended the mailing of the annual benefit estimate Statements due to federal budget considerations. Recently, the agency resumed sending the Statement, but only to people who are age 60 and older and who are not yet on benefits; people younger than 60 will not have a Statement mailed to them.
However, this week the agency set up an online service that allows people age 18 and older to register and create a personal My Social Security account. People can then get benefit estimates, view their yearly earnings history and also get general information about Social Security.
Click on the link below for the Social Security web page. On the left hand side you will see the link entitled “Get Your Social Security Statement online.” Just click on it to get all the information and to register for your own personal account.

The Loss of General Assistance

Client Spotlight: The Loss of General Assistance
Article is from the Community Legal Services of Philadelphia October Newsletter.

Billie Washington was struggling to make ends meet. A former home care attendant, she was no longer able to work due to her rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and other illnesses. While waiting for her disability benefits hearing, she began receiving General Assistance. Ms. Washington carefully budgeted the monthly $205.00 to cover her rent, toiletries, medical co-payments, and public transportation to get to doctor's appointments. When she found out that General Assistance was being eliminated, Ms. Washington felt like she had the rug yanked  out from under her. Describing the feeling of desperation, she said, "I was crushed. I just, I didn't know what I was going to do."

She turned to Community Legal Services for help and attorney Michael Froehlich took up her case. With his representation, Ms. Washington will be the lead plaintiff in the lawsuit filed against the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to reinstate the General Assistance program for 68,000 former recipients. "I'm overwhelmed to realize that someone really cares. I'm really happy that everyone at CLS is taking such a great interest; without their authority, no one is going to listen... I'm glad CLS is here to make people listen and understand what we're going through."

Ms. Washington is taking it day by day. "You've got to pray. Try to keep your head above water. It's just hard." She can no longer afford all of the medications that she needs and is forced to make difficult compromises that could further affect her health. People with disabilities across the state have been put into similar vulnerable positions. On October 1, CLS, along with three other law firms acting as co-counsel, filed a lawsuit in Commonwealth Court.CLS is determined to provide Ms. Washington with the very best representation, and further, to stand up for the 68,000 people whose lives are affected by the state's decision to eliminate General Assistance.
