FOUR TIPS FOR SAVING MONEY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

GO INTO THE HOLIDAYS WITH A SPENDING PLAN.
Make a budget in advance for each aspect of your seasonal celebrations — gift-giving, entertaining, etc. Be strict with yourself, and don't go over. And if you're going to run up some debt, have a strategy to pay it off already in place. Spare yourself some anxiety come the new year.

MAKE YOUR OWN GIFTS OR PERSONALIZE LOW-COST GIFTS.
A personalized gift can make a bigger impression than something that's more expensive, but more generic. If you're into crafting as a hobby, use it to generate some gifts. If not, buy some candy or cookies in bulk, and present them in individual gift boxes that you've decorated yourself. Use your imagination.

LOOK FOR FREE OR LOW-COST HOLIDAY ENTERTAINMENT.
A driving or walking tour of the outdoor decorations in your area is a festive thing to do, and doesn't cost you anything. A lot of churches and civic groups sponsor low-cost or free entertainment around the holiday season as well, such as concerts. Keep an eye out for community listings. Also, Groupon and Living Social are full of discounted holiday entertainment options.

MAKE ENTERTAINING A GROUP EFFORT.
Don't feel obliged to take on all of the responsibility — financial and otherwise — for entertaining yourself. Host a potluck. Or prepare the main course, and invite guests to bring side dishes, deserts or beverages. Your friends and relatives may welcome a chance to show off their food preparation skills, and you'll save some money.
